Captain Craig Cook has demanded more from his Workington Comets team-mates despite promising results against Newcastle and Glasgow.

Comets overhauled an eight-point deficit to draw with Newcastle on aggregate in the Knockout Cup on Saturday and set up a home-and-away replay, then almost beat one of the title favourites Glasgow on their own turf the next day, eventually losing 46-44 to claim an away league point.

Cook admitted there were plenty of positives to take from the weekend but wants that standard to be the minimum they aim for as he targets a first ever league title for his local club.

"I was disappointed to be honest," he said. "It was the same story again, too many mistakes.

"I know Glasgow are one of those teams that can really perform at times but they rely heavily on their top three.

"Thankfully, we caught them on an off day but we still couldn't capitalise on that."

The Cleator-based racer blamed individual errors for the results and said he was frustrated by the side not fulfilling their potential.

Sunday's result leaves Comets sixth in the table and two points off the play-off places, albeit having raced the joint fewest meetings in the league.

He said: "We've still got work to do and it's got to change because I believe we can be a better team.

"We've got to iron out these sloppy mistakes because they're costly.

"There were a lot of positives there but we shouldn't have been close, we should have annihilated Glasgow and we lost.

"There are a couple of riders who need to believe in themselves a little bit more.

"We came close at Glasgow and I suppose we should take something from that and put it into our next meeting."
