A familiar face is among the latest riders to be confirmed for the speedway Cumberland Open Championship at Derwent Park next month.

Former Comet Tero Aarnio, as well as Peterborough’s Ulrich Ostergaard and Redcar rider Ben Barker, will compete in the individual contest, raising the curtain on Comets’ season on March 25.

Comets owner Laura Morgan said: “Tero has ridden for Workington before and everyone knows what he can do around here.

“Any time Ben is here makes for an exciting meeting and there’s always that love-hate relationship with the fans which he likes to continue, a bit of pantomime.

“Ulrich would have been a big consideration for Comets' teams over the years if his circumstances would allow for it. He’s a very good rider.

“I’m really excited about the riders that we’ve released so far and it’s great to be able to give Tero a chance as he’s without a club at the moment.”

Former Workington skipper Ricky Wells, ex-Comet Nathan Greaves and Nicolai Klindt have already been confirmed for the competition, which also features all seven current Comets and three other unannounced guests.

Meanwhile, Comets fans will get a first look at their new team next month at the club’s traditional press and practice day.

The session will be held on March 18, with exact times yet to be confirmed but riders expected to take to the Derwent Park track at about noon.

The popular Meet The Riders event will also return, with a date to be announced soon.

The Comets team will also take to the track in a behind-closed-doors practice session next month, which Morgan said was possible due to the club’s new relationship with Workington Town.
