Fixed race nights, the return of tactical substitutions and an increased team building points limit have been confirmed in a shake-up of British speedway.

The changes were agreed at the British Speedway Promoters' Association's annual general meeting in Tenerife at the weekend.

Workington Comets are listed as one of the teams set to ride in the Championship, although the club has yet to officially confirm whether it will be running next year.

Comets have been named in group three of the League Cup with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Berwick and have been drawn against Newcastle in the Knockout Cup.

Top-flight sides will race on Monday and Wednesday, with Swindon allowed to race on a number of protected Thursdays.

The Championship is set to run on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The set race days have been agreed in a bid to cut out fixture clashes.

The team building points limit has been increased to 42.5, with Premiership sides permitted one rider on an average of 8.00 or more but no such restrictions in the Championship.

Tactical rides have been scrapped, with tactical substitutions set to be reintroduced between heats five and 14, excluding heat eight, when a team trails by six points or more.

The Championship has also gained another team, with Lakeside set to join after spending a season in the National League.

Promotion and relegation, which was brought back this year, has been shelved but play-offs for the league titles have been retained for the top four sides in each division.

Former Comet and Sheffield team manager Simon Stead, who guided the Tigers to a league title this season after retiring from riding, has been granted a farewell meeting.

British speedway chairman Keith Chapman said: “Both Rob Godfrey and myself would like to thank all promoters for delivering positive outcomes from the AGM.

“All promoters left the meeting with great enthusiasm towards the 2018 season.”
