Workington Comets duo Ricky Wells and Claus Vissing are among the top contenders to win the Premier League Pairs tonight, according to club owner Laura Morgan.

Comets must qualify from a daunting group with Premier League leaders Glasgow, Newcastle, Peterborough and the hosts Somerset, but Morgan believes her pair can mix it with the best of them.

Morgan said: "It's a really competitive line-up so from that point of view I'm sad that I'm not going.

"As long as the track and weather are all right I think it'll make an excellent competition this year.

"But actually, although it's competitive, it's actually not that strong in some areas so I'm putting us up there with a shot of winning it.

"We've won it before and it's more than time for us to win it again."

Although Morgan won't be in attendance at the Oaktree Arena (7pm start), she admitted it was a competition Comets were keen to succeed in, having won the competition six times.

"It's one of the best meetings and is a very prestigious competition," she said.

"Everybody remembers who won the Pairs and Fours the previous year.

"Because it's Cardiff the next day, the support for all the different pairs will be tremendous."

Kenneth Hansen was originally due to represent Comets with Vissing but was forced to withdraw due to commitments in the Danish League.

Skipper Wells is not a big fan of Somerset's circuit but agreed to step in and Morgan said she was grateful for his help.

"Although it's not one of his favourite tracks, Ricky was happy to ride it for the club and supporters," Morgan said.

"Somerset's not an easy track at all and I would imagine it gives their pair a definite advantage.

"But Claus rides it well and Ricky has had good meetings there, plus he's even more up for it now because he's got a point to prove."
