Matt Williamson said his majestic ride for Workington Comets to beat Glasgow's Richard Lawson was one of his best speedway moments ever.

Williamson enjoyed another good meeting for the club on Saturday, scoring paid nine, with the highlight a spectacular ding-dong battle with Lawson.

The Tiger knows Derwent Park as well as anyone, being a former Comets captain and track record holder, but Williamson blocked his every move and rode out of his skin to keep him at bay.

"Heat 13 was one of the best speedway moments I've ever had," Williamson said.

"I was thinking, 'Why has Jacko put me in here' but I knew I'd have to try and do something.

"I came around Richard and realised I was second.

"Coming out of every bend I could see him trying to come under me but it was some good, clean racing.

"The reaction from the crowd and everything is what we live for; there's no better feeling than that.

"It's just carrying on what in my eyes has been a fantastic season.

"I wasn't expecting that sort of result against Glasgow because we know how strong they are, being in the play-offs."

Williamson followed up Saturday's performance with second place in the National League Riders Championship at Leicester behind Dan Bewley, of Maryport.

He said: "I didn't really know what to expect from that meeting because I class myself as a big-track rider.

"It shows how much I've come on this year to only drop two points and be fast all night."

Meanwhile, Comets will now travel to face Newcastle at Brough Park on Sunday, with the Diamonds making the return trip to Derwent Park on October 7.

And the club's end-of-season do will be held at the Trades Hall in Workington on November 3.

The Championship Riders' Individual has also been rearranged for October 14 after Sunday's meeting was called off due to a bad weather forecast.
