Workington Comets will be back on track next season after the club's bosses agreed to continue racing in 2018.

Comets' future was called into question this week when the British Speedway Promoters’ Association turned down the club’s application to switch from Saturday night racing to Fridays.

But at a meeting between club owner Laura Morgan, her brother and co-promoter Steve Whitehead, team manager Tony Jackson and commercial manager Dan Moody on Thursday night, a way forward for the club to continue on Saturday nights was agreed.

Morgan was excited about the future and revealed building plans are already under way for the team, with the club hoping to announce the first rider next week.

She said: "We had a three-hour meeting but once we'd decided we were running it turned into a team-building exercise.

"That's why we were up sat around the table until half past 10, looking at riders and different combinations.

"Phone calls have already started."

The proposed change of race night came about partially because of Cleator speedway star Craig Cook’s Grand Prix appearances next year but also due to long-standing concerns over running on Saturdays and being able to promote at major events in the county.

And Morgan confirmed that, although the permanent switch to Fridays was rejected, her contract allows her to run some meetings throughout the season on Friday nights and the club hopes to use that facility to avoid clashing with Grand Prix events.

She said: "Hopefully we'll get it right and the BSPA will work with us so that we can have the fixtures the way we want them.

"The other thing we've thought about is, if we were to run on a Grand Prix night, to find a way to show it in the bar after the meeting.

"It will also give us an idea of what it might be like if we were to run on Fridays in the future."
