Whitehaven have completed the signing of amateur centre Danny Green.

The 24-year-old from St Helens, who plays both rugby codes, was at the Recreation Ground this week to complete the necessary paperwork.

Green plays for the West Park St Helens rugby union side and also for the Haresfinch amateur rugby league team in the North West Men’s League.

Whitehaven have a flourishing relationship with the Haresfinch club, which general manager Amanda Hewer was at pains to point out.

“Our relationship with Haresfinch is growing from strength-to-strength and we hope this will continue,” she said.

“They have been a great club, allowing us to train and use their facilities on our long away trips.”

Head coach Carl Forster, who has also put on coaching sessions at Haresfinch, said: “Danny is a versatile player who has operated at full-back, wing and centre, but is equally comfortable playing in the second-row.

“I think he will make a very good professional because he has the right attitude and commitment even as an amateur. He is a tough player who is great in defence and he adds more depth to our back line.

“The squad needed additions after we had released players and suffered injury set backs.”

Green is likely to be included in the 19-man squad for Sunday’s League One clash at the Recreation Ground against Doncaster.

The Dons new coach Richard Horne takes charge of his first game this weekend and says that all of his charges will start with a clean slate.

He said: “I know a fair bit about a lot of the players having watched a number of recent games.

"Where I will be a bit in the dark is about the players who have been out injured for quite a while but who are on the verge of returning.”

He will be consulting Pete Green and Rhys Lovegrove who were in charge of team affair following the departure of Gary Thornton.

Several players, including prop Feka Paleaaesina and full-back Tom Carr, are expected to be available for Sunday’s trip to west Cumbria.
