Toronto Wolfpack, Rugby League’s newest members, will play their second game of the 2017 season in west Cumbria.

Whitehaven will host the Canadians at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, March 22, in the Kingstone Press League One.

The Wolfpack will return to Cumbria on June 18 when they take on Workington Town at Derwent Park.

But, because clubs don’t play each other home and away in the inaugural round of regulation League One fixtures, it means the west Cumbrian neighbours won’t get to sample the delights of Toronto.

Barrow, the third Cumbrian side playing in League One next year, will be jetting out to Canada for their fixture with the Wolfpack on Saturday, May 20.

Workington will stage the west Cumbrian derby with Whitehaven on Good Friday (April 14) while Whitehaven will play the final regulation game at home on July 16 to Barrow Raiders.

Town will actually have two derby fixtures in six days as they go to Barrow on Saturday, April 8.

The new league season starts on Sunday, March 5, with Whitehaven travelling to South Wales Ironmen, while Town have Newcastle Thunder as their visitors to Derwent Park.

They could be in action as early as February 19 in the first round of the League Cup, which hasn’t been drawn yet, but both clubs are happy with how the fixtures have panned out for them.

Town chairman Gary Mounsey said: “As a club, we are very positive about the season ahead and are more than happy with how the fixtures have worked out.”

His opposite number, Tommy Todd, said: “Apart from the obvious one, missing out on the plum home game with Town, we like the look of the fixtures.

"We have home games against most of the teams that people expect to be up there challenging.”
