One of west Cumbria’s bright young prospects, who has spent the last five years with Wigan, has joined Whitehaven.

Jake Moore, 20, a strong-running forward has become the 24th member of the Whitehaven squad being assembled for the 2017 season.

General manager Amanda Hewer said: “There is one player still to be announced, so we are not quite finished.

"But Carl’s squad is taking shape very nicely and Jake’s arrival adds even more dimension to it.”

Moore signed pro terms with Wigan in 2013 after two years in their scholarship programme.

At the time, the Warriors descried him as "a future star with real talent, a strong-running forward whose athleticism means he can also play in the backs."

The first club to nurture his talents was Wath Brow Hornets, where he played from a young age.

The coaching team at the Brow knew from those early days he had the quality and attitude to make it in rugby league.

His commitment and attitude were exemplary for training and games.

He was rewarded for all his efforts with a call-up to the England Academy squad in 2015.

Whitehaven were quick to step in when Moore was released by the Super League club and coach Carl Forster feels he has a great prospect on his hands.

He said: “After watching Jake in his under-19 Grand Final with St Helens, I knew he would be a fantastic addition to our squad.

"He is a tough runner with great skill.

“I am absolutely delighted with the squad the club has been able to put together for 2017 and feel sure Jake will be a valuable member of it.”

Forster’s next task ahead of the first training session on November 15 will be to confirm his pre-season friendlies.

The first one has been slotted in for Sunday, January 15 when Whitehaven will travel to play Keighley Cougars.

“We have also agreed to play at Barrow but still have to decide a date, said Hewer.

"And there’s the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy game at Workington Town, which still has to be fitted round a suitable date."
