A bizarre injury has ruled Whitehaven winger Danny Green out of action for at least the first month of the League One season.

Green, who joined Whitehaven from the St. Helens amateur club Haresfinch last year, has a broken bone after a taxi ran over his foot in the town.

Head coach Carl Forster said: “Danny had just stepped off the kerb to get in a taxi which was coming very slowly.

"The end result was the taxi went over his foot and dragged him down.

"I have been to the hospital with him and he has been fitted with a special boot and he’s been told that he will be out of action for four to six weeks.

“I am gutted for him because he has been training very well in the build-up to the season and would have been starting against Oldham on Sunday.”

Jessie Joe Parker could play on the wing but he only arrives back today and Forster will be assessing his fitness at training tomorrow night.

“Jason Mossop is being monitored all the time as he recovers from a kidney problem and we are hoping that he might be ready to get the green light to resume playing," Forster said.

Dion Aiye has been back in Whitehaven for a week and has trained on his own, as well as the squad, as he builds up his fitness following a bout of pneumonia while he was waiting for visa clearance in Australia.

Meanwhile, Forster has expressed his satisfaction at a home draw in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup when London Skolars were picked out of the hat to visit the Recreation Ground on February 25.

“That’s all you can ask for in a cup competition, a home draw, and I’m especially pleased it’s League One opposition as it means we can keep the same level of intensity between playing Oldham and Hunslet,” he said.

Whitehaven chairman Tommy Todd would have preferred to meet neighbours Workington Town in the third round instead of London Skolars.

“The ideal draw for us would have been Town at the Recreation Ground because that’s the game which would have generated most money for us," he said.

“At the end of the day, that’s what the Challenge Cup is about to clubs at the lower end of the scale.

“Never mind, we both have a chance to progress and maybe meet up in the fourth round.

"You can never complain about a home draw, while Town face amateur opposition."
