A strong family connection with Whitehaven Rugby League club for well over 50 years is set to continue.

Paul Shepherd has joined the board of directors at the Recreation Ground, following his father Kenny Shepherd, a club stalwart.

Kenny, a lifelong fan, first became involved with the Supporters Club in the 1970s and since then has had three different spells as a director.

Now son Paul, who was first taken to Whitehaven matches as a babe in arms, has become the 10th current director with the League One club.

Chairman Tommy Todd said: “We are delighted to continue the Shepherd family connection with the club.

"After Paul was born, I can remember him being brought to matches as a very small baby.

“Kenny had three stints on the board, finally standing down in 2010 after about 40 years involvement with the club. He was County President and was also Whitehaven’s County representative for 15 years.

“Paul works as a fireman, at Sellafield, and his knowledge of ground safety and first aid will be very useful.

"He’s younger than most of us and will bring youthful enthusiasm to the board, as well as fresh ideas.”
