WHITEHAVEN and Workington Town will be packing down for a ferocious battle for the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy tomorrow as derby fever hits both camps.

It could be a baptism of fire for this week’s new Workington Town pack recruits Ryan Bailey, Caine Barnes and Dan Norman.

Whitehaven meanwhile, who are struggling with injuries, have been boosted by the month-long loan signings of back-rower Matty While from Barrow Raiders and Levy Nzoungou from Salford.

Prop Nzoungou came through the ranks at St Helens and helped their U19’s side win the Academy Grand Final against local rivals Wigan Warriors on the back of an unbeaten season in 2016.

Both signings will be available for tomorrow’s game.

Player/coach Carl Forster said: “We’re made up to bring in Matty, he will add to size to our pack and depth that we need.

“Levy is a big lad and a strong runner. We’re really looking forward to seeing him in a Whitehaven shirt.”

Town are the current holders of the trophy and are keen to retain it after winning 32-16 at Derwent Park last term.

But, in the close season, several players have switched sides so it could be an interesting clash at the Recreation Ground, ko 3pm.

Town brought in hooker James Newton and full-back Elliott Miller from Haven who are both hoping to feature.

While Marc Shackley and Karl Olstrom, both ex-Town stars, are set to feature for Haven.

But close season signings from up the road Jason Mossop, Stuart Howarth and Phil Lister won’t play through illness and injury.

Town boss Leon Pryce is well aware of the meaning of the game, having played in some of the hotly contested Super League derbies.

But he also stressed that it is still a friendly and the serious business begins in two weeks time when League One kicks off.

“I am looking forward to it,” he said. “I’ve played in all the Super League derbies which have been fun and it’s good to be involved in.

“But there’s not two points at stake. So, for me, it’s a game I would like to win but it’s not life or death.

“I know the fans want to win it but we have to be realistic and it’s a friendly match.”

Forster said: “I have no doubt that things will have changed in a fortnight when we start the league programme against Oldham and will have virtually a full squad to choose from.

“It is what it is, however, and we will give it our best shot against Town.

“We know it’s always one the fans want to win, whatever the competition.”
