Whitehaven fans are hoping to give their side an extra man on the terraces in tomorrow's League 1 play-off final.

Hundreds are set to flock to the south of the county as Haven take on Barrow at Craven Park with the winners being promoted up to the Championship.

Lifelong fan Shaun Drinkwater says he has been amazed by the amount of interest the game has generated and says he hopes more than 500 Haven supporters will make the trip.

"I have been taking one coach to matches this season but we are already up to four and I know another two buses are going down from Kells," said Mr Drinkwater.

"It has just been amazing, my phone literally hasn't stopped ringing."

There are another three minibuses heading to Barrow, many more going by car and some staying over for the weekend.

"I hope we are looking at more than 500 and it will be a good following," added Mr Drinkwater.

"It is what we need as it is going to be a hard game and we need the fans to get behind the team and give them a boost.

"This is a great chance for us."

Barrow are the slight favourites for the final, according to Skybet, with the Raiders 4/7 to win and Haven 11/8.

But that will certainly not deter the club, team or fans who have high hopes of success.

Haven chairman Tommy Todd believes this is the most important game for the club in a generation.

“This is the biggest match we have had in more than 10 years, possibly in a generation,” said Mr Todd.

“We have got to say whatever happens on Sunday as a town, as a board and as a club, we can only be proud of what these lads have achieved.

“I have to give special mention to the coach Carl Forster. he came in for some very unfair criticism at the start of the season but he has never looked back and went on to win the coach of the year award.

“It would also be fantastic to see Scott McAvoy and Craig Calvert go out on such a high note.

“There is so much to play for and I am sure the team will go out there and give it their all.

"And our supporters are the noisiest in rugby league. The volume they put out per head is better than anyone which can be a huge boost."
