Workington Town players asked to take pay cut

WorkingtonTown players were last night asked to take a pay cut as the credit crunch kicks in at Derwent Park.
Town, who have struggled this season with only one victory against professional opposition, were beaten 66-14 at Oldham in Championship One last Sunday.
A source close to the club told News & Star Sport that the players were asked to take the cut at training last night and were considering the suggestion.
Chairman Dave Bowden refused to comment this morning.
The club have no game this Challenge Cup weekend after being beaten by Lezignan in the third round last month.
Meanwhile, the Town players and coaching staff are to be put through their paces at a two-day army camp.
The Town squad will be uprooted from Derwent Park and packed off to Catterick Garrison for a gruelling weekend of team-building action over April 18 and 19.
Coach Dave Rotheram is looking forward to being guests of the Duke of Lancaster’s regiment at Catterick and hopes it will be an enjoyable exercise for his team.
“It will be a weekend of team building and character revealing,” said the Town boss.
“We have a few weekends spare so rather than have it off I thought we could do something constructive together.
“The aim of the camp, according to our schedule, is to introduce us to a military environment and training routines in order to improve our chance of success.
“It is also to give their battalion team a chance to train alongside professional rugby league players.”
Town stars will be put through an assault course and the ‘gun run’ as well as undergoing circuit training with an army PT instructor.
