Workington Town aiming to tie down more players to new contracts

Quick acting Workington Town hope to re-sign more of their top names over the next few weeks – before looking for fresh talent to boost their Championship challenge next term.
The club have been quick out of the blocks this year, experienced ex-Super League star Jamie Thackray, Marc Shackley and Karl Olstrum already committing to the club, with try ace Elliott Miller the latest to re-sign on Thursday night.
“We are heading in the right direction, signing a lot of young, enthusiastic Cumbrian lads, as well as Jamie Thackray,” coach Gary Charlton said.
“We think we are hopefully going up in to the next league and re-signing players now brings a bit of stability.
“It means we are not rushing about at the end of the season to get them, when other clubs can speak to our boys.
“We are working through them now, speaking as and when we can, and the more that sign up, the better for the club.
“Once we get the backbone of the team sorted out we can look to bring in more players who will bring something else to Workington Town.”
Town can secure promotion if they win at title-chasing Doncaster on live TV next Thursday.
“The lads have performed to a pretty high standard all year and it would be a good place to show what we can do,” Charlton added.
The Dons have lost Mick Butterfield for at least a month after he fractured his hand in last weekend’s win over Barrow. Forward Fran Welsh was stretchered off with a broken ankle and will miss the rest of the season.
