Workington Town have beaten the transfer deadline to land Salford City Reds centre Andy Morris.

Morris, 19, who signed for the Reds from St Helens’ amateurs Blackbrook, has starred for the club’s Under-20 side, and this year went full-time with the Reds’ first-team squad. The Reds are expecting big things of Morris who has been rock solid in defence this season and has proved hard to handle with his size and strength in attack.

He is expected to go straight into the Town squad to face Barrow Raiders in tomorrow’s crucial Championship One clash at Derwent Park (3pm), along with Workington’s other new signings, Wakefield Wildcats’ Chris Annakin and Adam Walne from Salford City Reds.

Town chairman Dave Bowden was delighted to have got the signature of Morris, right, on dual registration forms, and said: “We are more than happy with what the players have done for us this season and I am very happy to have added Andy to our squad.

“I have said all along that the squad is light on number and we are very conscious of this. Adding the three recent signings will help us on the numbers front and also give our injured players the chance to recover. At least we now have things covered.”

Town were keeping tight-lipped on the starting line-up ahead of the clash with league leaders Barrow. Town must win tomorrow and prevent Barrow getting a bonus point to put them back in the driving seat for the £50,000 winner-take-all prize.

Doncaster, in second place, currently split the two clubs but their defeat at Whitehaven last Sunday has virtually wrecked their chances of the title.
