Workington Town beat Whitehaven in Play-Offs

Workington Town beat Whitehaven 26-2 in the Championship One Play-Offs and will now go to play Doncaster next Sunday to decide who will play Barrow Raiders in the Grand Final.

The game at Derwent Park was held up for an hour to give ground staff the chance to clear away standing water.

When it eventually got under way at 4pm, it took Haven 28 minutes to open the scoring, Carl Rudd, in what turned out to be his last game for the club before retiring, notching a penalty to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

But those were Haven's first and last points of the game.

John Patrick edged Town ahead with a try in the 32nd minute, Carl Forber adding the two to see Town into a 6-2 lead.

Town's Elliott Miller then went down in a heap five minutes from time. He was treated for an injury for a full 20 minutes before being taken to hospital by ambulance. Unconfirmed reports suggest that it was a jaw injury and referee Robert Hicks appeared to put an incident on report.

The teams left the pitch but came back to resume the game, Forber adding penalties in the 38th and 40th minute to see Town in with a 10-2 lead at the interval.

But it was all one way traffic in the second period, Mark Calderwood crossing in the 46th minute, Forber adding the conversion before landing two penalties for 20-2.

Marc Shackley then touched down for Town 10 minutes from time, Forber adding the extras for a convincing 26-2 victory.

Earlier, Barrow Raiders sealed their Grand Final spot with a 22-20 win at Doncaster.
