If we can’t do it, we hope you win league, Doncaster boss tells Workington Town

Doncaster boss Tony Miller wants Workington Town to take the Championship One title – but only if his own hopefuls fail to top the table.

Miller’s team were hammered at Derwent Park in May, after making a fast start, and he is hoping for much better in the return, shown live on Premier Sports on Thursday next week.

“Workington are probably the form team this year. I’ve been impressed with them,” said Miller, who is full of respect for the work done by Town’s joint coaches Martin Oglanby and Gary Charlton.

“We were 18-0 up against them last time and then they blew us away. We couldn’t live with them.

“Gary and Martin have done a good job and both are good blokes. They are honest guys and have worked hard.

“They are like us in that they’ve had to start from scratch and build up, and we have a mutual respect.

“If we don’t win the title, I’d like to see Workington win it. It will be a cracking game and I can’t wait for it. It will be our first time on TV this year, which gives it added spice.

“We have to win against Workington to keep our title aspirations alive. I can’t see Workington slipping up much, if I’m honest.

“We have lost to Workington and Barrow and didn’t get a bonus point, so we are two points behind them. It could come down to goal difference. That’s how tight it could be.

“Our goal was to get promoted and it looks like we will achieve that. Now we would like to win the league, as would Barrow and Workington. I don’t think Doncaster have ever won a league title. The club’s been going over 50 years and fans haven’t had much success to cheer about. It would be nice to reward them.”

Miller predicted Haven would join the top three in the Championship next term, and Doncaster visit the Recre on August 5.
