Highly-rated Seaton ARL half-back Callum Phillips has penned a pro deal with Workington Town.
Phillips, 21, capped 17 times for Great Britain Community Lions Under-18s, is the most capped Lions player at that age group, and was voted man of the match in the Cumberland Cup final at the age of just 16. He was also a member of the West Cumbria Under-18s who won the National Youth League and play-off final.
Phillips was also voted National Youth League Player of the Year in 2010.
“When Gary [Charlton] and I took over at Town, it was on our remit to build a side around the best local amateurs. And Callum is a massive signing for us,” said Town joint coach Martin Oglanby.
“We’ve been patient and bided our time with him. Callum’s got huge potential and his attitude and work ethic is second to none. He has progressed nicely in the amateur game – you only get out what you put in.
“His quality of handling, distribution and speed will see him cover three positions for us – half-back and nine.
“He’s been off the radar for 12 months but Callum is, without doubt, the outstanding amateur international in Cumbria.
“He has always looked after himself and I am sure he will progress in the professional game as his brother Brett has with Town,” added Oglanby.
“Seaton ARLFC need to be congratulated for the work they have done over the years at youth level. It’s a great accolade to the club for bringing both Callum and Brett through to the professional ranks.”
Phillips, who has been out of the game for a year due to having a knee reconstruction, follows in the footsteps of his brother Brett, 24, who scored a debut try for Scotland against England Knights recently after only 12 months in the professional game.
And father Graham also played for Town.
Town added that they wished to thank the Travellers Rest Supporters Club and the club’s Super Fan Lotto for helping secure the services of the talented youngster.
