Brett Carter signs new deal with Workington Town

Workington Town have re-signed star full-back Brett Carter.
Carter, 24, had been the target of Whitehaven and Barrow Raiders but chose to stay on at Derwent Park where he is also employed as a community development officer.
“I’m very happy where I am and it would have taken something very special to have swayed me,” Carter told News & Star Sport.
“Barrow and Whitehaven were an option.
“A lot of people would have presumed I’d just go back to Barrow with it being my home town, but I love playing here at Workington and things are going good.
“Other factors that made my mind up for me included the way Dave Bowden has looked after me, you can tell he has the club’s best interests at heart. The fans are also incredible.
“And finally, the way we all grouped together after Elliott [Miller] was taken to hospital during the game against Haven also proved to me what a great bunch of lads my team-mates are. We all look after each other.”
Miller, who was heavily concussed during the game which was held up while he received treatment before being taken to hospital, won the Championship One Young Player of the year award at last week’s annual Co-operative Awards ceremony in Leeds.
And Carter, who lives in Barrow, also had a hand in the other award won by Town.
“We have a great community programme that is run by Marnie [Jackson] and team-mate Jarrad Stack is also involved,” he said.
“It was great to win that award for all the effort that was put in.”
Fans’ favourite Carter, who has just completed his third season with Workington, scored nine tries for Town last this summer. “I think that was an improvement on last year but I contributed a lot to Elliott’s tries,” he joked, Miller ending the season as second in the Championship One try-scorers list with 23.
Town joint-coach Gary Charlton was delighted that the latest piece in the jigsaw had dropped into place, and said: “It’s a very big signing for us as Brett has played very well all season.
“He’s a great player to have as the last line of defence and second to none at coming into the line. He’s 24 and is only going to get better.
“Brett’s very good at creating things from nothing and, when he collects the ball he gives us a great go forward, and links very well with the threes and the forwards to give us good yards.”
