Workington Town's Jamie Beaumont vows to come back with a bang

Injury-hit Workington Town forward Jamie ‘Bomber’ Beaumont has pledged to be back fighting fit for the new season – his 10th in succession with the club.

Former skipper Beaumont, who still has a year left on his contract, missed most of last season with a groin injury but is hoping to be back in full pre-season training.

He started off the 2008 campaign as captain but when he picked up the injury half way through the campaign, the armband was passed on to Dean Burgess, who also ended the year on the sidelines.

Beaumont admitted it was a huge disappointment not to be able to play his part in Town’s recent campaign but plans to put that right in 2009.

He said: “It is always disappointing to be injured and to miss out on playing with some good lads who are now leaving makes it more disappointing.

“But now we need to pull together through the pre-season training and build for next year.”

The ex-Seaton amateur is heading into his 10th consecutive season at Derwent Park but this is in his second spell so he has served around 16 years in total.

He admits it will still be tough in NL2 next season but that they have to aim high.

He added: “There are lads starting to commit to the club now which is a good thing and we are going to set our targets high.

“This was a disappointing year and we have got to get better. It is a competitive league, a lot of clubs have shown that anyone can beat anybody on the day, it is just about how much people want it.

“If we can get a good squad together, then there is a good coach here and there is no reason why we can’t mount a good challenge.”
