POWERHOUSE prop Dean Burgess has signed a new deal to keep him at Workington Town for another year.
Burgess, who was made captain earlier this season in the absence of Jamie Beaumont, has been missing with a ruptured muscle since last month but is a key member of the squad to sign back on.
His coach Dave Rotheram is delighted that Burgess has put pen to paper with the club.
“Dean has been fantastic for us this year. He has had a bit of an injury setback of late but prior to that he has shown himself to be a great leader on the field and put in some fantastic performances.
“He is still quite young and a local lad and I hope we will get many more years from him.”
The youngster is still undergoing treatment on the problem and would love to be back in time to lead his side in the first game of the NL2 play-offs but is unsure whether he will be ready.
“I am going for an injection in my arm on Friday so I am hoping it will take some of the pain away,” said Burgess. “But I am going to have to wait and see what effect it has.”
The 23-year-old is disappointed that his season, which started so well, has been interrupted by the injury. He can’t wait to get back into action and has high hopes for Town’s chances in the NL2 play-offs.
“I just want to have another go,” he said. “I am enjoying my time with Town and I’m still just 23 so I have a few seasons left in me but this injury has been a bit of a downer.
“But I think if we can get a few players back for the play-offs then we can give it a real go.”
Burgess is the first player to sign but Rotheram is hoping that others will follow on.
He added: “We are just starting the process of speaking to players and hopefully others will soon follow Dean’s suit.”
