Town are in play-off driving seat - Swinton boss

Swinton coach Paul Kidd has admitted Workington Town are now in the driving seat for the last available play-off slot in NL2.

Kidd’s outfit are Town’s nearest rivals for eighth position but are four points behind the West Cumbrians with three games to play.

Both sides face tough run-ins to the campaign with Town travelling to fourth placed Keighley this Sunday and following that up with a home match against leaders Gateshead, before heading to Oldham, in third, on the last day of the regular season.

And Swinton go to in form Rochdale for their clash this week, before entertaining Oldham and then second- placed Barrow on the final day.

“I think we both have very tough run-ins,” said Kidd. “Rochdale are in-form and Oldham and Barrow are both chasing automatic promotion so it is going to be tough for us and I would have to say that Workington are in the driving seat.

“Mathematically it is still possible for us but we are coming off the back of a seven match losing run before the weekend so there has not been much talk of play-offs in our dressing room.

“I think Town have had a similar season to ourselves, struggling a little but pulling results together and I think they have done okay.”

Kidd admits they would still love to snatch the last place back off Town and knows that this weekend is probably their best chance of pulling some points back as they go to seventh place Rochdale.

Town’s Travellers Rest Supporters Club are organising a sportsman’s dinner on Friday, September 5, with guest speaker, former GB international prop Shaun Wane.

Wane, who ended his playing career at Derwent Park in the 1993/94 season, also had spells with Wigan and Leeds.

He won every medal available to him as a player, before graduating into coaching, and is currently the Senior Academy Coach at Wigan Warriors.

Shaun will be supported on the night by comedian John Scott and regular MC Howard Nicholson.

The dinner is to be held at the Washington Central Hotel, Workington, and will cost £25 a head.
