Whitehaven bid to end their season on a high tomorrow when they contest the promotion play-off place for a move up to North Lancs Cumbria.

They visit Burnley, who finished runners-up in the North Lancashire League, clinching that place with a big win over North Manchester last week.

Whitehaven, as well as being runners-up in the Cumbria League were also beaten finalists in the Cumbria League Cup, so earning promotion would be more than compensation.

But as always, it will depend on the quality of team the club can put together for an away trip – something that contributed to their relegation two years ago.

Whitehaven had committed themselves to a friendly at Cockermouth in a worthy charity cause but, when the RFU asked them to fit-in the play-off game at Burnley, they had to pull out of the original fixture.

It left Cockermouth with a problem as they had plenty going on at the special fundraising day when proceeds are split between the Great North Air Ambulance and the club.

“The last two years have been a great success and we are hoping for a similar response tomorrow,” said Cockermouth coach Chris Wright.

“It gave us a problem when Whitehaven were asked to go to Burnley but Wigton have very kindly stepped in and agreed to send a mix of first and second teamers to play.

“The fundraiser is billed as Ladies Day and we have plenty going on from 2pm through to 8pm with the game kicking-off at 3pm."

While Whitehaven will be trying to move up in to North Lancs Cumbria again, Penrith are also travelling as they bid to reach the National League level.

Penrith runners-up in North One East travel to Birkenhead Park, who finished second in North One West.

Carlisle, who won North Lancs Cumbria, will be presented with the champions’ trophy after their final league game at home to Fleetwood tomorrow.
