The best team in the county will be playing in west Cumbria tomorrow – putting their unbeaten record on the line at St Benedict’s.

Kirkby Lonsdale have won all 19 games so far, putting them 56 points clear of their hosts.

They are well on their way to the title in North One West and promotion to the National League.

But, although they are still looking over their shoulders at the other end of the table, Saints won’t be overawed by the task in hand.

Over the last few weeks, Saints' resources have been pushed to the limit, with an horrendous injury list placing a major strain on the club.

Ryan Fisher, Steven Nelson and player coach Steven Wood all returned in last Saturday’s 21-0 home win over West Park St Helens, and more might be back tomorrow.

Secretary Stephen Howse said: “Unfortunately, we lost inspirational captain Stuart Wilson who had to pull out due to illness and that has been the way of it this season.

“We could and should have had more points against West Park but, after the last few games, what Saints needed most was a win.

“So far, we have used upwards of 40 players in the first team squad and each and every one of them have done the club proud.

“It will be a tough test this week against the league leaders but whatever team we put out, the opposition will have to earn the points at our place.”

In North Lancs Cumbria, Workington were heartened by a good 7-7 draw with Hawcoat Park to end a sequence of seven straight defeats.

The Zebras are still bottom but have a big relegation battle tomorrow when they visit Upper Eden, currently third bottom but with Trafford in their sights as they try to wriggle free.

The third member of the bottom three is Silloth and they, too, can do themselves a favour by beating Littleborough at the Jim Brough Rugby Park.

Coach Mark Orchard was encouraged by his side’s second-half display against Wigton last week when they finished 12-7 ahead. Trouble was they had trailed 27-0 at the break.

Wigton are just about still in contention for the promotion play-off place but really can’t afford to lose any more games – and tomorrow they host leaders and champions elect Carlisle.

The sides meet up at Lowmoor Road a fortnight after Carlisle had won there 17-5 in the Cumbria Cup.

The Greens are fourth in the table, but eight and nine points behind the sides who are third and second respectively.

It’s not an exacting finish to the season for the men from Lowmoor Road and, if they can overcome their stiffest test against Carlisle, will still feel they can come up on the rails and pip both De La Salle and Aspatria.

Still very much in the hunt for second place Aspatria are a point behind De La Salle and the two meet at Bower Park on April 1 in what could be a promotion play-off place decider.

Immediately on the agenda, though, is a tricky trip to Hawcoat Park tomorrow.

In the Cumbria League, the big game will be at Cockermouth where the deposed leaders, now down to second, host current, unbeaten leaders Keswick.

Carlisle Crusaders, who lost 32-14 at Keswick last week, should enjoy it a bit more tomorrow at home to Millom.

The other games are: Egremont v Furness; St. Benedict’s Ravens v Whitehaven and Windermere v Moresby.
