Bolton had done the double over Carlisle in their last league encounters, but there will be no repeat this season as the city side won the game 43-8 at Warwick Road.

Carlisle were quick to secure possession and worked the ball quickly across the left to put winger Ben Purdham in the corner with barely a minute gone. Fly-half James Telford goaled.

Turnover ball allowed full-back Andy Gllendinning to show the Bolton defence a clean pair of heels down the left wing and dive over on seven minutes.

Then, from a scrum, the ball was worked to the productive left side as winger Dan Holme crashed through for the third Carlisle try.

Five minutes later, as the Bolton fly-half was put under pressure from a kick through, flanker Henry Wainwright pounced and rolled over for the bonus point try, converted by Telford.

Carlisle just took the foot of the gas a bit and Bolton kept the home side pinned in their own half but could only manage a penalty to trail 24-3 at the break.

The Cumbrians started the second half with 13 men as Wainwright and Joel Davidson had been yellow-carded but Carlisle defended well, while Bolton couldn’t find their way through.

When back to their full complement, Carlisle exploited the penalties committed by a frustrated Bolton and pinned the visitors deep in their 22, allowing the forwards to put Tom Graham over for the fifth try.

From the restart, however, Bolton managed to find a gap in the Carlisle defence to score an unconverted try.

The Carlisle forwards were dominating the set piece though, and with ten minutes left, Bolton were shoved off the ball ten metres out, leaving flanker Callum Grey the task of dotting down for try number six.

Finally, turnover ball let winger Dan Holmes weave his way through the gaps in the exposed Bolton line, laying the ball off to Wainwright, who had the easiest of tasks to walkover for the last try.

Silloth paid the price for their ill-discipline at home to high-flying Fleetwood as they had a total of five yellow cards in the match.

It was only 9-7 to the visitors at half-time but the handicap proved too much in the second half as Fleetwood’s superior fitness also showed as they finished 36-7 winners.
