Egremont beat Millom 36-12 under the Bleach Green floodlights to stay fourth in the Cumbria League table.

The ‘Friday Night Lights’ matches at Egremont are popular with teams and supporters alike, but for a while this time it looked as though both sets of players were in the dark, given the number of handling errors and mistakes made in the first half.

This made for a very disjointed game, which never really got going until late in the proceedings.

Egremont made a good start to the match, pinning Millom down for a lengthy period with the strong running of the forwards and taking the lead with two well-worked tries.

Inevitably, Millom responded and scored a try of their own to leave the game finely poised at half time.

As the second half got under way, Egremont were probably guilty of over-playing the pick and go forward game which had served them so well, leaving their pacy and powerful back division with too little possession.

However, once they shifted tactics in favour of the backs, the home side began to look increasingly confident, and with far fewer knock ons and turnovers, Egremont built a healthy lead.

A hard-earned penalty try then shifted the balance completely in Egremont’s favour and, despite Millom working hard for their second try of the evening, the home team crossed for their fifth and final try of the night to record a more than satisfactory bonus point win.

Egremont do not see any further action in the Cumbria League until April 8 when they face a tough final game of the season at home to Whitehaven.

Whitehaven crushed Carlisle Crusaders 60-0.
