Wath Brow held on to win an exciting National Conference Premier Division derby at Kells.

Going into the last quarter, the Hornets were sitting on a comfortable 18-0 lead but Kells produced a dramatic late surge to cut the deficit to just two points at the final whistle.

Both teams finished with three tries apiece and the fact that Cole Walker-Taylor landed three goals to Ross Gainford’s two was the deciding factor.

It was 10-0 at half-time after Curtis Teare and Jamie Devine had scored tries for the Brow and Walker-Taylor had converted one of them.

Wath Brow’s third try by Dean Rooney was a controversial one, but the conversion and then a penalty from Walker-Taylor appeared to have put the game to bed.

But Kells responded well and came back strongly to score three tries in the last 20 minutes to put the game on a knife edge.

Reece O’Neill crossed the Hornets line twice and Dominic Wear also got over, but crucially only two were converted by Gainford.

So, the Hornets held on to two precious points which pushed them to second in the table just four points behind champions and leaders Siddal, but with a game in hand.

The defeat leaves Kells in mid-table but also with a game on hand of those around them. Trouble is, the game in hand both Cumbrians have, is against each other at the Brow.
