Wath Brow continue to keep the pressure on National Conference Premier Division leaders Thatto Heath Crusaders.

The Hornets are two points behind the St. Helens club with a game in hand and, on Saturday, the Cumbrians are due to take on the leaders at Thatto Heath.

Wath Brow were too good for Pilkington Recs on Saturday, winning 30-8 at Red Beck after they had established a 20-4 lead by half-time.

Man of the match, centre Peter Caddy gave Wath Brow the lead with a try on 11 minutes and three minutes later, winger Curtis Teare followed him over the whitewash. Cole Walker-Taylor converted both and Hornets were well on their way.

Second row forward Mike Garrity was always prominent for Pilks and he inspired their response, which ended in a try for centre Mark Ashton.

Wath Brow hit back before the break as centre Greg Howland crossed for the third try, converted by Walker Taylor who added a penalty.

Six minutes after the restart, Caddy sliced through for his second try before the visitors responded again with a try from scrum-half Ryan Stevens on the hour.

Conditions were deteriorating after the persistent rain of the previous three days and there was no further score until two minutes from time when Walker-Taylor darted through for the fifth and final try. He finished with 14 points.

Thatto Heath had made it win number five with a 38-4 win against Egremont, who currently prop up the table, the only side without a point.

Egremont knew it was going to be tough, and that increased when they conceded an early try to centre Matty Horton.

To their credit, Egremont dug in well and did not concede again until two minutes before the break. But that try from second-rower Jamie Tracey was quickly followed by another from substitute Brad Ashurst. Dan Birkett landed his second conversion and, at the break, Egremont trailed 16-0.

Three minutes into the second half, Egremont were on the scoreboard when winger Ryan Barnes crossed and it stayed at 16-4 until the last 15 minutes.

The late onslaught from Thatto Heath rather spoiled what had gone before from Egremont as they scored four more tries through Tracey, scrum-half Jack Jones (2) and Andy Lea. Burkett kike three more goals.

Matches between Rochdale Mayfield and Kells are usually close with the west Cumbrians on the wrong end and it was the same on Saturday. This time it was 19-16, a result which drops Kells to fifth.

Prop David Lowery was outstanding for Kells who were always behind but never out of contention.

Mayfield went in front on five minutes with a try from centre Matty Ashton which was converted by scrum-half Zac Hartley.

Back roared Kells with a try from full-back Lewis Smith which stand-off Ross Gainford, but Rochdale scored two quick tries from Hartley and winger Kieran Harmer.

But it was 18-12 at half-time as Kells came back with a try from winger Reece O’Neill, converted by Gainford.

A Hartley drop goal on 64 minutes was their only score of the second half and, deep into stoppage time, O’Neill went in for an unconverted try to give Kells the last word, if not the points.

In the Cumbria Men’s League, all four games were affected by the wet weather as pitches became waterlogged. Games at Ulverston, Seaton, Walney and Hensingham will have to be played at a leter date.

Only two games went ahead in the Iggesund Cumberland ARL with Cockermouth v Kells postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Broughton Red Rose were unable to follow-up their fine win at Cockermouth when they hosted Aspatria and went under 24-0.

Mark Irwin, Shane Evitts, Scott Donald, Alex Barton and Luke Johnston scored the Aspatria trie. Johnston converted two of them.

Flimby moved to the top of the table with a 28-6 home win against Lowca as Dean Scholey and Calum Moffat both crossed twice. Ethan Williams also crossed for Flimby as Moffat landed four conversions.

The Lowca try was scored by Jason Thornthwaite, converted by Ryan Nicholson.
