Hensingham continued their promising start to the Cumbria Men’s League season by beating early leaders Wath Brow 20-14.

The BARLA Cumbia Cup finalists scored four tries through Josh Rogerson (2), Sam Rossi and Liam Campbell with Marc Bainbridge landing two conversions.

For Wath Brow, there were tries by Mark Watson and Ellis Curnow, both converted by Matt Sibbert who added a penalty.

It’s been a slow start for reigning champions Distington but they grafted for a hard-fought 25-20 win at Ulverston. Brian Ritchie’s try on 71 minutes was the game breaker for the west Cumbrians.

Shaun Sutton, Steven Conway, Jack Penrice and Nicky Cook scored the other Distington tries with Scott George converting two and adding a drop goal.

Ulverston had been dogged opponents and kept in the contest with tries from Matt Dean (2), Johnny Hutton and Steve O’Connor. Connor Saunders converted two of them.

It means that Hensingham take over the leadership of the Men’s league from Distington.

Ellenborough also headed to the south of the county but didn’t fare as well, beaten heavily 44-0 by Walney.

Veteran Mike Whitehead and Stuart Tippett each crossed twice and there were further tries for Dave Nicholson, Brad Nicholls, Jamie Morrow and Tyler Smith,

The conversions were by Nicholson (2), Morrow, Jordan Staferri and Smith.

In the Iggesund Cumberland ARL, there was an absolute thriller at Kells where the home side drew 28-28 with five tries and four conversions each.

The Kells tries came from Jake Parker (2), Lloyd O’Neil, Nathan Doran and Kieran Halcrow. Parker (2), Grant Gainford and Stephen McCourt landed the conversions.

The Flimby tries came from Carl Grima (2), Luke Baker, Dean Scholey and Terry McDowell. Their conversion were landed by Scholey (3) and Darren Pape.

Egremont Rangers, who topped the league last season, are back on top after a 48-6 win over Broughton Red Rose.

Youngster Albert McKay’s individual try on 30 minutes was an impressive display of confidence and speed that effectively put Broughton well out of catch up range.

Callum Aitken led the way with four tries while the others came from James Newton, Matty McKewan, Dan Telford, James McDonald, McKay and Craig McCullough,

The conversions were from McDonald (2), Anthony Leak and Ryan Barnes.

John Ritson scored the Red Rose try with Jonty Bell putting over the conversion.

Cockermouth Titans recorded their second win of the season since returning to the league when they beat Lowca 42-20.

The Titans scored seven tries through Scott Burgess (2), Anthony Hay, Ryan Burns, Peter Wood, John Dollachin and Luke Reeson.

The six goals were kicked by Burgess (4) and Gareth Skillen (2).

Lowca remain at the foot of the table still looking for their first point after four games.
