Egremont are looking forward to matching up with semi-professional opposition again on Sunday.

For the Gillfoot side appeared among the game’s giant-killers when they beat Workington Town 18-0 at the Recreation Ground in 1998.

Rangers travel to play York City Knights in the third round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, and won’t be without a chance.

The only concern is they will have to tackle the Knights without four quality players.

Stand-off James McDonald damaged a knee in the last round win at Wigan St. Patrick’s, where second-row forward Mike Ellwood and BARLA international hooker Marcus O’Brien both picked up shoulder injuries.

John Paul Brocklebank, who has returned to his amateur roots this season after two years with Whitehaven, will also miss out after suffering a knee injury in the previous round against the Army.

Brocklebank has taken on the role of player-coach and has the support of two assistants, his dad John Brocklebank and Paul Henson, who was the club’s caretaker coach last season and guided them to safety in the National Conference Premier Division.

Henson said: “All wins away from home in the Conference Premier are good but the victory at St. Pat’s was a bit special.

“It’s obviously going to be a big test going to a semi-professional club on Sunday but we will give a good account of ourselves.

“I watched the video of their narrow defeat by North Wales Crusaders on Sunday and they certainly have some decent players.

“There are one or two big, strong players among their ranks and, although they lost to a golden point decision in extra-time, seem a capable side.

“We will be taking a number of supporters with us, so I hope we can give them something to remember our day out in the Challenge Cup.”

Egremont are the last of west Cumbria’s amateur representatives in the competition after Kells were beaten by Rochdale Mayfield.

They play in the same Conference Premier Division as West Hull, who host Whitehaven tomorrow.

There’s one amateur game in the county tomorrow, a first round tie in the BARLA Cumbria Cup.

Ellenborough host local rivals Glasson Rangers.
