Reigning champions Distington are back on top of the Cumbria men’s league – but rivals Hensingham have two games in hand.

Distington won 29-22 at Walney Central to draw level on points with Hensingham.

They took top spot on points differential but their rivals crucially have those two matches, in which, they can regain the advantage.

It was always tight as Distington led 14-10 at the break. And in the end, it was the boot of Scott George which made the difference.

The teams scored four tries apiece but six goals and a drop from George proved crucial as Walney’s Dave Nicholson only managed three successful kicks.

The Distington tries were scored by Matt Hewer, Liam Friel, Gavin Martin and Jamie Friel while Matty Elliot (2), Brad Pearce and Brad Nicholls crossed for Walney.

The biggest shock in the league was on Friday night when bottom side Seaton hammered Glasson Rangers 64-16.

It was a massive pick-me-up for Seaton who had to cancel training on Tuesday because of insufficient numbers.

But they put out a strong side for the trip to Glasson and won easily against a side who could have gone top of the league with a win themselves.

It was all over at half-time with Seaton enjoying a 34-0 advantage and Glasson, at least, made a better fist of it in the second half.

Ex-Workington Town winger Stephen Dawes grabbed a hat-trick of tries and he was joined on the score sheet by Jack Earl (2), Stuart Gallagher, Jon Carl Bryan, Miguel Blanco Charters, Jordan Pritt, Liam Wood and Dominic Smallwood. Mark Walker converted 10.

The Glasson tries were scored by Carl Armstrong, Matt Wilson and Josh Jones with two converted by Sean Mumberson.

Seaton moved off the bottom as a result and now it’s Ulverston who occupy the wooden spoon position as they lost 42-22 at home to Wath Brow.

It represented a good turn-around for the Brow who were trailing 16-10 at the break and racked up eight tries by the end.

Jake Pearce (2), Glen Magean, Sam Curwen, Jay Wetherall, Curtis Teare, Dane Richardson and Clarke Riley scored tries for the Hornets. Curwen kicked five goals.

Only one game was played in the Iggesund Cumberland ARL and it was quite a remarkable one if only for the fact that one player helped himself to six tries.

With no Conference League rugby, Matty Henson turned out for Egremont A at home to Aspatria and ran riot bagging half a dozen touchdowns in a 44-18 victory. The two other tries came from Joe Bold and Kevin Thompson with Bold landing six kicks.

Ross Barton crossed twice for Aspatria with Greg Wrathall also scoring while Luke Johnston landed three goals.

Both semi-finals in the Cumbria Shield Cross County Shield were played on Saturday, with victories for Walney A and Kells A.

Broughton Red Rose staged a fighting finish at Walney after trailing 22-6 at half-time, a score line which got worse. But they battled back well and were just beaten 34-30.

Johnno Ritson (2), David Campbell, Grant Law and Bleu Robinson crossed for Red Rose tries with Ryan Frazer nailing five kicks.

For Walney, there were tries for Harry Gee (2) Dec Gavin, Jake Devereaux, Jacob Helyer and John Corkhill. George Nicholls kicked five goals.

It was a bit easier for Kells A as they beat Askam A 38-10, being able to build on a half-time lead of 14-6.

Paul Culnean (3), Harry Watson (2), Ross Gainford, Nathan Doran and Ryan Robb scored the Kells tries with Gainford landing three goals.

For Askam, there were tries for Tom Askew and Cameron Cooper, plus a conversion by Brad Jackson.
