The final day of the Cumbrian amateur rugby league season proved to be a red letter occasion for Distington.

The village club beat Barrow Island 48-4 to lift the Cumbria Men’s League top four play-off final at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground.

It rounded off a remarkable season as they had won four major competitions inside the county without losing a single game.

After retaining the league title, they won the top four final to add to the BARLA Cumbria Cup and Cumberland Cup, which had been won earlier in the season.

Distington proudly take their place in the local rugby league record books as the 2016 Invincibles.

Yet, at half-time, they were only sitting on a 12-4 lead and Barrow Islad were still very much in the contest.

Powerful Bryan Ritchie had got over for the opening try on six minutes with Clayton Sutton adding the conversion.

The lead was doubled on 19 minutes when Aidan Worthington scored the second try, again converted by Sutton.

Barrow Island played some decent rugby when the opportunity arose and they scored a good try from Tez Neauto on 31 minutes to give them heart and change the half-time team talks in both dressing rooms.

Although the Islanders had spells of possession and created a couple of chances, they were generally outplayed in the second half as Distington responded by scoring six unanswered tries, all of them converted by Sutton.

Within five minutes of the restart, Distington had scored two tries through Phil Lister and man-of-the-match Ritchie to go 24-4 clear

Although Barrow Island bravely kept battling on, Distington proved too strong and added further tries from Gavin Martin, Clayton Sutton (2) and William Ritchie.
