Wigton out to boost title aspirations
Last updated at 12:39, Friday, 19 March 2010
Wigton will be attempting to edge nearer the North Lancs Cumbria League title tomorrow when they tackle Keswick at Davidson Park.
But they go to the Lakes knowing that Keswick have a very good record on their own patch against the Greens. There have been victories in both the League and County Cup in recent years.
Last week’s 66-13 defeat at St. Benedict’s by Keswick won’t instil extra confidence into the Greens.
Long-time League leaders Wigton need five points from their last five games - all away from home - to clinch the title.
It’s not gone un-noted at Lowmoor Road that promotion would see Wigton change places with their oldest rivals, Aspatria, who will be relegated from North One West.
Aspatria failed to score a try and conceded four in a disappointing 22-9 home defeat by Northwich last week, but they were already doomed to the drop.
Back in North Lancs Cumbria, Workington still harbour hopes of pipping Kirkby Lonsdale for the promotion play-off place but they are running out of games.
Tomorrow the Zebras travel to Eccles boosted by the return of forwards Jason Howarth and Ben Lanigan, while the experienced Martin Armstrong is fit to start in the centre.
After that handsome win against Keswick last week, St. Benedict’s have another Cumbrian derby - this time against Netherhall at Maryport.
Coach Ian McQuire, delighted with the big win against Keswick, when they were without six regulars, should have a bigger squad to choose from this time although Mark Caulfield and Kevin Parr will miss out through injury.
Netherhall have been doomed to relegation for weeks now.
But have still been putting in some spirited performances, especially at home and want to finish the season on a high.
In the Cumbria League Creighton have been unable to get enough players to host Millom tomorrow as a heavy crop of injuries and unavailabilities has decimated the squad.
The other games see Aspatria Eagles host Moresby; Wigton Wanderers entertain Workington Steelers; leaders Whitehaven take on Gosforth Greengarth and Cockermouth play Egremont.
