Early lead sets Cockermouth on road to victory against Wanderers

After the disappointments of recent weeks, Cockermouth put in an excellent performance to beat a big, competent Wigton Wanderers side 41-0.
Cockermouth took only four minutes to get on the score sheet.
A scrum close to the Wanderers’ try line was disrupted by a powerful drive by Cockermouth’s pack.
The ball ran free in goal and Will Gate was quick to pounce and score on his 1st XV debut.
Then Andrew Skillen kicked a penalty on 15 minutes to give the home side an 8-0 lead which stayed the same until half-time.
After the break Wanderers were quick to get into Cockermouth’s 22, but a telling tackle by Jack Dawson snuffed out the danger.
Stuart Moore broke blind from the ruck and released the ball to Skillen and he made ground deep into the Wanderers’ half. The ball was quickly recycled for Michael Fagan to score under the posts and Skillen converted.
Cockermouth extended the lead when Rob Ward intercepted a pass to score under the posts. Again Skillen converted.
On 60 minutes Dawson sidestepped beautifully to avoid three defenders and score from close range. Again Skillen converted.
Two tries in the last ten minutes by Fagan and Skillen confirmed Cockermouth’s superiority and Skillen’s conversion to the second was the last action of the game.
Celebrations at Gosforth Greengarth after they scored their first win of the season.
They beat Aspatria 59-12, scoring nine tries against a young Eagles side.
It was 24-7 at half-time and Gosforth Greengarth went on to score five converted tries in the second-half.
Matt McGoogan, back from a long injury lay-off, scored two tries, and so did Alex Price. The others came from veteran Steve Edgar, the experienced back row forward who operated at fly-half; David Holmes, Jason Graham, Andy Donaldson and Jude Barton. Edgar converted here while Holmes improved four.
Seventeen-year-old winger Dean Barwise had an excellent game and was unlucky not to score.
Eagles tries came from veteran Colin Noble and Oliver Gray, with a conversion by Lee Holliday.
Leaders Whitehaven were outstanding in their 111-0 win over Creighton at the Playground., scoring 17 tries in total – 13converted by centre Stephen McConnell.
Creighton were ripped apart in the first-half when Whitehaven built-up a 54-0 lead.
Wayne Dixon (2), Luke Scott (2), Scott Henderson, Paul Lancaster, Calum Jennings and Philip Henderson crossed.
There was little respite for Creighton in the second half as the home side raced over nine times through Lancaster, with two more to complete his hat-trick; David Park, Chris Flynn, Mike Gaffney, both Philip and Scott Henderson, along with replacements Adam Rothery and Michael Parkinson.
In the end it was a brave effort by an out-classed and weakened Creighton as they played the last 20 minutes with only 13 men having run out of replacements.
In the battle for second place Millom put pressure on Egremont when they won 19-12 in south Cumbria. They are now just two points behind them with a game in hand.
Early Egremont pressure eventually told when they took a quick tap-penalty just outside the Millom 22. and Richard Postlethwaite cleverly delayed his pass to Jack Kelly who broke through, beating two defenders to crash over the line for an unconverted try.
Millom hit back with three points from a penalty by Danny Redhead.
Egremont’s Postlethwaite fed number eight Gareth Lewis he then timed his pass beautifully for Kelly to burst through and run 40 metres for a try under the posts which Postlethwaite converted.
Millom forced a series of five metre scrums close to the Egremont line.
They eventually scored when number eight Tony Hartley picked up and touched down over the line for a try converted by Redhead just on the stroke of half-time.
In the second half Millom won the majority of set-piece possession and , despite some excellent defensive tackling by captain Chris Temple and Lewis to keep Egremont in the game, the only scores were three more Millom penalty goals kicked by Redhead.
The match between Moresby and Workington Steelers wasn’t played because of a mix-up.
