Wath Brow’s English Lion Peter Caddy eyeing Toronto trip

Wath Brow ace Peter Caddy is set for a trans-Atlantic tour – after bidding to help the English Lions complete a clean sweep in the amateur game’s Four Nations tomorrow.

Caddy has been named at centre for the trip to Limerick to face the Irish Wolfhounds after a 48-14 win over Scotland and a 56-8 success against Wales.

Ireland, meanwhile, will be looking for their first win following the postponement of their first scheduled game against Scotland which was followed by a narrow 28-26 loss against Wales.

Lions coach Jim Taylor said: “This will be the culmination of the Four Nations competition, and the reward for all the hard graft that my squad has put in to Sunday training sessions at Milford ARLFC will be the trip of a lifetime to Toronto in Canada in early October.

“The players and staff have travelled to the sessions from all over the place without complaints to be involved with the English Lions.

“The camaraderie among the group is as good as I have witnessed in all my time in charge of the Lions. I honestly feel we are in for a big display against our Irish opposition.”

Meanwhile, Egremont Rangers could edge closer to securing promotion to the amateur game’s biggest stage tomorrow when they host Castleford Lock Lane.

Egremont, in third, head Cas on points difference but have two games in hand. Hunslet Warriors should retain top spot in National Conference Division One at Millom’s expense, but second-placed Bradford Dudley Hill face a tough task at mid-table Wigan St Judes.

Thatto Heath Crusaders moved above Wath Brow in the Premier Division after last week’s 28-24 win. But sixth-placed Hornets still only trail Premier Division leaders Wigan St Pats by two points in a congested table. And with a home game against basement side Saddleworth Rangers tomorrow, they should return to winning ways.
