Dawes hat-trick edges Maryport to win at Hensingham

A hat-trick from Maryport’s Jonathan Dawes helped edge a tight division one clash in his side’s favour, despite a strong performance from hosts Hensingham.

The two sides were locked all the way though the top flight game but in the end Maryport just came away with the spoils 42-36.

The game, well refereed by Colin Armstrong, could have gone either way but the Maryport side outscored their hosts by eight tries to six.

Dawes’ efforts were added to with touchdowns for Scott Akehurst, Sam Forrester, Craig Holdsworth, Ian Ivison and Mark Foster. Craig Foster rounded up the Maryport scoring with five conversions.

Kurt Maudling led the try scoring for Hensingham with two to his name, to go alongside one apiece for Richard Morton, Josh Rogerson, Alex Daprille and Gavin Maudling. Jamie Sharp converted all six.

Broughton won the only other top flight game, beating visitors Glasson Rangers 18-0.

Matthew Woodcock, Matthew Jackson and Mark Walker were the try scorers for Red Rose, with the latter also converting all three.

Wath Brow and Distington moved on in the SJR Cumberland Cup following convincing victories over Lowca and Ellenborough respectively.

Jason Connery had a 20 point haul to his name with a try and eight goals as Wath Brow beat Lowca 60-4 away from home.

But it was Lowca who led 4-2 at the break before Wath Brow kicked into gear and ran up a hatful of tries in the second period.

James McClellan weighed in with a hat-trick of tries, with Francis King adding a brace.

There were further scores for Phil Coyles, Kevin Williamson, Liam Martin, Greg Dawson and Jamie Irving. Dave Colley scored a lone try for Lowca in reply.

Distington also had a clear victory, 42-14 but it wasn’t always that way – with only six points separating the two teams at the break, Distington ahead 10-4.

They turned on the gas in the latter stages with braces for Gavin Martin and Aiden Worthington, Martin also adding three conversions.

There were further Distington touchdowns for Sean Adams, Trevor Dryden, Troy Armstrong and Ian Dryden. Clayton Sutton converted two.

Ellenborough’s Martin Stalker ran in two tries, with brother Craig also getting in on the act with one. Stephen Stoddart landed one goal.

In division two, Egremont’s game against Seaton A was called off with their ground unavailable and Maryport A did not have a team to go to Frizington.

But three games did go ahead with Great Clifton inflicting a 54-0 scoreline on Salterbeck A.

Tries came from across the park with Sean Woolfe, Danny Jones, Mark Fox, John Gaston, Carl Thompson, Nicky Burgess, Anthony Hay, David Liddington and Dave Hoskins all getting one apiece.

Burgess tagged on four goals with two coming from the boot of Michael Hill and one from Steven Hopper.

It was tight at half time between Cockermouth and Salterbeck Storm, just six points separating them, with Cockermouth just ahead at 12-6.

But Cockermouth surged on in the second half to run out 40-14 victors, with Justin Rooney scoring his first ever try for the club.

He was joined on the scoresheet by Mark Haycock, Jamie Skillen, Richard McMillin, Lee Woods, Ryan Burns and Liam Wild. Mark McMillin and Gareth Skillen both converted three.

Kells A were also victorious, seeing off visitors Hensingham A 46-6.

David Dickinson and Sean High led the way for Kells with a brace of tries each and they were followed over the whitewash by Ben Ferguson, Scott Nichol, Sean Fitzsimmons and David Agnew. Lewis Smith was on target with seven conversions.

Hensingham A’s points came from a try for Nicky Anderson, converted by Lee Hoskin.
