Legend Bev plays for the Masters in his 70s

CUMBRIAN past masters of rugby league put Scotland to the sword in a new format of the game designed for veterans – now it is hoped to launch the sport across the county.
Masters of League is designed for over-35s and it is hoped to transfer the popularity it enjoys in Australia and New Zealand to England.
Players wear colour-coded shorts, and tackling is allowed only for those aged up to 49.
At a tournament at Saddleworth, in Oldham, Cumbria beat a Scotland team including former Leeds and Great Britain prop Barrie McDermott by five tries to two.
And even former dual code star Bev Risman, now in his 70s, had a run-out for the county side.
Ex-Carlisle and Whitehaven pro Barry Quayle scored twice for the county team, and Dave Richardson, the former Barrow prop, Geoff McManus, of Carlisle, and Keswick’s Ryan Swindale, also crossed.
“I’d like to thank all the lads who went down to Saddleworth,” said Alan Davidson, the former Haven pro, who also took part and organised the county team.
“There were teams of 13, and we had the bare 13, so it was a big commitment. Bev Risman is obviously a legend who played for Great Britain and England RU, and it was nice to see him participating and supporting the event.
“It’s all about fun, and four or five over-60s took part. We’d like to launch district sides in Cumbria if we can.”
