Workington Reds boss pleased with pre-season fitness of players

Frightening is how Workington Reds boss Darren Edmondson has described the fitness of his players.
The Borough Park side began pre-season training on Tuesday and Edmondson is delighted with the condition of his side.
Captain David Hewson is leading the way after starring during the dreaded bleep test. With a score of 16.3 Edmondson said: “Every one of the players have come back in incredible condition.
“I’ve had long runs planned to get the lads in shape but they have been looking after themselves over the summer. It’s frightening to see how fit they all look and how well they have already done during the sessions.”
Workington welcomed former Carlisle United youngster Dan Wordsworth as he trained with the squad along with ex-Penrith flyer Dan Robinson.
Tony Hopper is expected to join the squad next week with Edmondson looking to bring in a couple more lads with a view to a deal.
Ball work has already begun as the 39-year-old gaffer was impressed with his squad.
He said: “There’s no point flogging the lads for the sake of it.
“I had planned long runs but they will be altered accordingly.
“Gone have the days where players were sent up mountains to clock up miles. It’s more scientific now and the lads have already been practising with the ball.
“The ball work will be increased, which will mean we can work on routines quicker.
“I’m still looking to bring in possibly another two players, which would complete the squad.”
“I’m delighted with what we’ve already got but if we can add a player of two it would put us in a great position.”The reserve side will take part in the sessions so they understand what it takes to become a first team player at Workington.
