Newcastle United could send some of their star names to Borough Park when they take on Workington Reds this summer.
Reds boss Darren Edmondson has announced his summer fixture list, which includes a match against the North East giants.
It is not known what side the Magpies are likely to send but some of their up-and-coming talents could be on show along with reserve and first-team regulars.
Edmondson said he is relishing the chance to take on Newcastle and has also booked Carlisle, Darlington and Gateshead to visit west Cumbria. He said: “It will be an exciting day for the lads. We have a few Newcastle fans in the squad so it will be great for them to play against them.
“I don’t know what kind of team they are likely to bring but I can’t imagine it will be a full strength squad.
“We might have a first-team name or two but it is more likely that the lads trying to break into their team will get a run out.”
No date has been set for the showdown with Edmondson expected to cement the fixture over the coming days.
Reds have pencilled in dates for some of their other fixtures, and as it stand will kick start pre-season against Gateshead at Borough Park on July 10, followed three days later with the visit of Carlisle.
Reds are also looking for an invite to the annual Annan tournament between July 17-18 and will host relegated Darlington on July 27.
Edmondson said: “We have a strong pre-season line-up against some very good sides. We are working on cementing the dates.”
