Edmondson praises in-form striker Wright

Workington Reds marksman Jonny Wright has won praise from Darren Edmondson – for taking heed of a pep talk from the boss.

The club’s top-scorer in his debut season last term, Wright has opened his account with four goals in Reds’ opening seven Blue Square North games.

But Edmondson revealed that only in his last couple of matches has he been fully satisfied with the striker, after he responded to a call to sharpen up aspects of his game.

“I don’t think he started as well as last year, and I had a chat with him a few weeks ago, about how he needed to give a bit more and not relax after his first season, when he did ever so well,” the manager said.

“I don’t want players to think that if they play badly one week they’ll play again the next. I genuinely believe he can be a good player at this level, and probably higher, but only if he wants to be that player.

“He’s taken that in to our last two games and caused problems for players. He virtually beat Alfreton on his own. Hopefully the penny has dropped.

“He’s a big player for us, but he can improve. I don’t want him to stand still.”

Wright netted twice in Workington’s 4-1 home victory over Burscough and also found the net in the pre-season 3-1 friendly win over Carlisle United.

Reds face Redditch United at Borough Park tomorrow after two away draws at Alfreton and Droylsden.
