Edmo – Collin will attract league attention

WORKINGTON Reds keeper Adam Collin will be a target of Football League clubs if he continues his impressive start to the season, says boss Darren Edmondson.

Collin has hugely impressed Edmondson, who believes the young custodian, who has previously trialed with Hereford United and trained with Carlisle United, has the ability to step up the league ladder.

“Adam’s probably been our most impressive player,” said the manager, who is delighted that Collin has heeded advice over how to improve his game, including committing to take more crosses.

“It’s only a matter of time before people look at him. When he went to Hereford, they wanted to sign him, but didn’t have a reserve team. He would have been going there as second choice and not playing, which wouldn’t have been ideal if he had been going all that way.

“A lot at Carlisle also spoke highly of him when he went there for a week, but the manager at the time, Paul Simpson, had other ideas.”

The ex-Newcastle United youngster also caught the eye in the 3-1 pre-season win over Carlisle. He is the only senior keeper on Reds’ books at present, but Edmondson has a couple waiting in the wings if his No 1 picks up a serious knock.

Reds have taken only two points from their opening three league matches, but Edmondson is pleased that fans are being patient with his team.

“They have to keep believing in the lads,” he continued. “They realise we are trying to play football the right way. We need to win matches, but the boys have played well, and possibly haven’t had the points they deserve.”

Reds are still waiting to discover the length of defender Kyle May’s ban following his straight red card in the 2-2 draw against Stafford Rangers on Saturday.

“It could be three games, which would be a blow, but we have options,” Edmondson said.

WORKINGTON reserves play their first home game of the season on Friday night against Fleetwood Town.

Manager Herbert Briggs said: “Fleetwood are the team we pipped for the title last year but as we know we have a completely different side this season.

“I handed out 13 debuts last week in the 8-0 defeat at Burscough but for the visit of Fleetwood I will have Craig Johnston junior, Stuart Pettit, Dan Gullen, Mathew Blake, Dan McDerrmott, Liam Jackson and Mathew Mahoney all in contention for a place.

“All seven missed the Burscough game but Greg Mitchell, Brian Rutherford and Ryan Moody are all unavailable for Friday night.”

The kick-off at Borough Park is at 8pm
