Subscription clean up with an 18-point haul in Carliol League

The Thursday section of the Carliol League continues to provide the most interest in this league as the four top teams won all of their most recent fixtures.

Subscription took 18 points from their two most recent games winning 10-0 at West End and beating title contenders Brampton 8-2 at Myddleton Street.

Dalston took eight points from their home fixture with Holme Head while Courtfield got the same result at Stanwix.

A maximum win for Brampton at Wetheral kept them very much in the hunt. Tonight’s games could lead to some clarification as Dalston travel to Subscription and Brampton will face Courtfield on the Carlisle club’s green. Big wins for Courtfield and Dalston would make the final fixture between Dalston and Courtfield a league showdown but I have a feeling that the points will be fairly evenly shared tonight leaving more than two teams in with a shout next Thursday.

In the Friday section Brampton look to have a great chance of taking the title even though they could only manage a 6-4 home win against third placed Stanwix. Courtfield failed to take advantage when only just scrambling home 6-4 against Linton. In the other fixtures completed this week West End defeated Subscription 7-3 and Courtfield’s rearranged game against Stanwix saw Courtfield come out on top 9-1.

Ladies Nationals Leamington Spa is currently the centre of the bowling world for ladies as the National Championships commenced there 12 days ago.

To date however there has been very little to set Cumbrian pulses racing apart from the performances of the trio representing Workington Bowls Club.

Pat Williams, Joyce Hodgson and Barbara Hamill had entered for the first time this year and were probably regarded as Cumbria’s second string but while Wigton’s Nicola Bowe skipped Wigton trio fell at the second hurdle the Workington trio put together three excellent victories before falling to Berkshire in the quarter final.

Another excellent result for the Workington club which has enjoyed a very good season.

Hopefully for Cumbria the best has yet to come.

Sisters Rachell and Victoria Forster represent Whitehaven Bowls Club and they will contest both the Junior Singles and the Junior Pairs while the experienced Sandra Parker is our representative in the Senior Singles. In the main event, the national singles, Cumbria’s hopes rest with Christine Wharton and Nicola Bowe both of Wigton Bowls Club.

County Cup

The final of the County Cup was played at Kirkbride on Tuesday evening and it proved to be another good night for the rejuvenated Workington Club when they defeated Silloth by four shots.

In the early 1970s Workington were top dogs in this event appearing in the final in four consecutive years and winning three of them.

There were further wins in 1978,1982,1990 and 1994 but in the last 18 years they have had only one final appearance in 2002.

All that was forgotten last night when in a very well fought encounter at Kirkbride, Barry O’Hare, Clive Allison, Alan Green and Paul Bannister led early on against Paul Wallace and held on well to finish all square.

On the other rink it was close throughout with Workington’s Jonathon Barber, John Hodkin, Danny Bradburn and Ian Williams getting home by four shots against Gazzer Graham in what was a low scoring 24 shot match.

Wigton BC

Wigton’s newest tournament, the Super Sixes, got off to a satisfactory start though it just failed to attract a full entry, 11 of the 12 places being taken. First prize went to Wigton with Aspatria finishing second, the two section finalists were Workington and Whitehaven. The new format was popular and it is expected that this event will be repeated next year. This Sunday it is the Annual Singles Tournament at Wigton with 39 entries currently entered to compete for the first prize of £200. There is still availability for further entries at 12.30pm.
