Thai Boxing sensation Jackson Barkhouse is set to top the bill against a top European fighter in Maryport after the success of the town’s latest show.

Maryport Dragons trainer Tommy Collins believes the teenager, who is already a double British champion, has a massive future and is ready to pit him against international opposition on home turf, possibly in November.

“I’m hoping to bring an international in for him, Dutch, Belgian or German,” said Collins. “It’s hard to explain how good he is until you see him. He’s a one-off and so mature for 18. You would think he’s been doing if for 30 years, he’s really developing.”

The welterweight enjoyed a unanimous points win over Robin Downer, of Glasgow, in front of his enthusiastic home fans.

“The lad he fought was unbeaten in 10 fights, but Jackson annihilated him,” added Collins, who also hopes to take Barkhouse and fellow prospect Jack Harris to fight in Thailand.

“We have some interest in sponsorship to get us out there. You learn from the best, and it would bring them on. I had Jackson over there to fight when he was 10.”

The latest Maryport show faced some rival attractions in west Cumbria but still pulled in a loyal following, ensuring a return to the town.

“It was a good turnout and the atmosphere was brilliant. We got a few decent results as well,” Collins continued. “It was a busy day but a good one.”

Lightweight Harris, from Crosby, and Flimby cruiserweight Anthony French both claimed Northern Area titles on the Maryport bill and are likely to defend their belts in Scotland in late summer.

An elbow to the head from Keswick light-middleweight Adam Stanger led to his fight with Scott McDonald, of Glasgow, being stopped in the third round, and also earned him the best local fighter accolade.
