Penrith athlete Vicky Johnston will be competing in the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, the third race in the five-race British Triathlon Super Series, just one month before the East End hosts the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Johnston, who finished second in the British Triathlon Junior Super Series last season, will be battling it out with a strong elite field in only the second ever GE Canary Wharf Triathlon on Thursday 28 June.

The British Triathlon Super Series has already visited Oxfordshire for the GE Blenheim Triathlon and Windsor Castle for the Toshiba Windsor Triathlon and the high-octane Super-Sprint eliminator format will guarantee an exhilarating race for the athletes and spectators alike, when it rolls into the heart of London’s financial district.

An excited Johnston, who raced in a European Cup race last season, said: “I am looking forward to Canary Wharf, it is my first time racing it but it is in such an iconic setting and has an amazing atmosphere that I'm very excited to race.

“Being a super sprint distance the race will be fast, quick and a good way to build my speed and practice my transitions.

“For the rest of the season my main race will be the Holten ETU Triathlon European Cup race at the start of July which is the qualifier for the Under 23 European Championships. I will then be racing the rest of the Super Series with the overall aim of a top 10 finish in the series.”

The athletes will compete in a series of fast-paced 30 minute heats, consisting of a 400m swim, 10km bike and 2km run, before a grand final where world-class athletes will compete for the men’s and women’s titles. The action starts at 6.15pm with the Women’s final scheduled for 8.55pm and the Men’s final at 9.30pm.

Following the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, the British Triathlon Super Series travels to Scotland for the GE Strathclyde Park Triathlon before it reaches its climax at the Virgin Active London Triathlon on September 23.
