Carlisle see off Kirkby in North Lancs league clash

Carlisle batted first at Kirkby, and with 84 not out from Michael Slack, 45 from Dan Gomersall, and 42 from professional Saliya Saman, Carlisle were 213 for 4 at tea.

Kirkby made a spirited reply in the North Lancs and Cumbria premier division encounter but were all out for 174, Anware making 51, Paul Fugler 46, and Mike Etchells, 37. Saman returned 6 for 50.

League leaders Cockermouth had a tough home game against Penrith. The visitors were in first, and mainly due to professional Upul Fernando’s 116 not out, Penrith went in for tea with 194 for 7 on the board.

Cockermouth professional, Amila Weththasinghe, returned an excellent 5 for 36. Cockermouth’s reply was dominated by Weththasinge’s 78, and Ryan Carruthers’ 56, and Cockermouth took winning points at 197 for 7.

League champions Furness had Haverigg as visitors, who had first knock and at 144 for 5, were in trouble until skipper Steve Evans joined professional Brenton Parchment, and without losing another wicket, Haverigg finished 50 overs with 206 for 5, Parchment made 100 not out and Evans a valuable 34 not out.

Peter Lawson, 3 for 49, and Jordan Buchanan, 2 for 38, were the wicket takers. In reply Glenn Capstick with 44, and Tom Smith, with 74, gave Furness that all important good fast scoring start, and in one ball short of 38 overs, Furness had won with 212 for 5. Parchment took 4 for 44 in 11 overs.

Cleator were at Millom and batting first soon lost opener Rob Mason, but once again Chris Quin got the Cleator innings back on track with a superb 107, and with excellent support from James Rodgers with 44, Cleator totalled 229 for 7. Millom pro. Geech Alwis took 4 for 60 in 15 overs. Millom would be disappointed with their batting, with nobody reaching 20 and were all out in 27.4 overs for 81. Shaheen Khan returned 6 for 33.

At home to Whitehaven, Lindal Moor gave an excellent batting display reaching 222 for 5 in their 50 overs.

Dean Williams led the way with 78, backed up by Jordy Hughes on 37 not out, Paul Clarke, 32, and Chris Brookshaw with 29. In reply Whitehaven again were saved by Dave Watson’s 48, with help from John Bennett with 42 n.o. as Whitehaven for the seventh time this season, hung on for the draw, at 139 for 9. Edward Waind bowled 15 overs to take 5 for 40. Perhaps the fight to avoid relegation is far from over.

Workington entertained Keswick and limited the Fitz Park side to 144 all out, professional Geech Kumara top scored with 32. Veteran spinner,Simon James, took 3 for 27. In reply Workington went to a comfortable win at 149 for 3, Andrew Reed scoring 61, and Simon Beare, 40 not out.

 

Division One

Dalton had the long trip to Lanercost and having first knock would be fairly satisfied at tea to have a total of 177 to defend. Joe Braund-Smith top scored with 33. For Lanercost Mike Armstrong took 4 for 26 and Chris Laird 4 for 41. In reply Lanercost could not handle Keith Gilliland’s bowling who took 6 for 24 to dismiss the home side for 110. Steve Wardlow made 36 and Laird 34.

The promotion contenders, Vickerstown and Wigton met at Walney, where over 400 runs were scored.

The home side at tea were 211 for 8 of which Sam Beckman made 40 and with 45 extras as a bonus Vickerstown were in a good position. Wigton’s Mike Holliday took 4 for 42. After tea, Holliday carried on the good work making 62, and with Tom Fleming’s 60, Wigton went to the win at 212 for 7 to gain 18 vital points.

Division One leaders Appleby Eden were at home to Hawcoat, and batting first made 249 for 5, Mark Ousby making 106 and George Moore, 45 not out. Hawcoat’s batting never really threatened Wigton’s big total and only Steve Hannaway with 36 not out caused the bowlers problem. Hawcoat Park were all out for 122, Ousby taking 4 for 8.

Ulverston were away to Penrith II and batted well to total 198 for 9, Luke Kafanka scored 78 and Stuart Cooper 44. Mark Osborne making 78, led Penrith to the win at 201 for 7. Gareth Yates took 4 for 52.

Seascale had a poor day with the bat in their game against Workington II being bundled out for 86, Lee Fleet top scored with 37, and veteran Paul McKeown took 5 for 16. Workington soon went to the win at 87 for 5.

Andrew Whinn finishing on 25 not out.

At Egremont, the home side had one of those days against Cleator II being all back in the pavilion and only 68 on the board. Mark Ponticelli took 3 for 6, and Dave Bell, 3 for 27. In reply Cleator struggled, but with Paul Knott hitting 30, went to the win at 69 for 5
