Talented young sprinter Mollie Kettrick has been celebrating after securing a place at the English Schools’ Championships.

Fourteen-year-old Mollie found out last week she had earned a place for the competition in Birmingham next month.

William Howard School student Mollie, from Longtown, impressed at the Cumbria County Championships last month.

And the teenager backed up that particular performance at the Cumbria County Schools Championships this month, winning in the Under-15 category 100m and 200m races as she did enough to get her place at the English Schools’ Championships.

Mum Marie said: “She is chuffed to bits to have been picked.

“I’m really proud of her. She went to the county school championships and won both of her events there this month.

“Mollie is at the inter counties in Hull at the weekend. That will put her on the way for the English Championships.

“Her coach [Mike Donnelly] is really pleased with her.”

On how she will now start preparing for the event in Birmingham on July 7-8, Mollie says she expects to be working hard in the build-up to the competition.

“I think I will be training all the time,” she said.

“I’m just quite happy to be going. Everyone has been dead supportive.”

Cumbrian Mollie, who now runs for Gateshead Harriers, says she will be trying to run 26 seconds this summer over 200m.
