Whitehaven swimmer Adam Metcalf is set to make a splash after being selected to represent Great Britain at the upcoming European Youth Olympic Festival.

The 15-year-old will travel to Hungary in July as part of a 50-strong multi-sport Team GB, which includes 16 swimmers, to compete against the best junior athletes from 50 European nations.

Adam was selected as one of only eight male swimmers from Great Britain following an outstanding performance in the British Championships.

At the event, in Sheffield in April, he swam the 100m freestyle in 52.45 seconds, putting him firmly at the top of the UK national rankings.

The teenager began his swimming career at Copeland ASC and is now with the Ellesmere College Titans based in Shropshire.

Adam said: “I am honoured to have been selected to represent my country.”
