There were only two Carliol League games played last Thursday evening – Wetheral are on tour and some of the Courtfield members still consider football to be a more beautiful game than bowls.

On July 30, 1966, when football was a beautiful game, Cumberland had a county bowls match at Wigton Park, the bowls match was played!

The two results from Thursday saw Dalston beat Holme Head at the Recreation Ground 62-44, 8-2 overall but the visitors had a 19-shot start which saw them take the two handicap points.

In the other game, Subscription had to give Stanwix four shots but did so easily winning 80-39 to collect all 10 points plus the two handicap points.

On Friday, Dalston were at home to Brampton and won 67-55 - both sides started level. Dalston won 7-3 overall and took the two handicap points.

Despite having to give visitors Holme Head 19 shots, Courtfield took the two handicap points and scored an overall 10-0 victory.

Stanwix had a one start, despite being at home against West End. West End won 61-59 and took the two handicap points by a single shot and won the game overall 8-2.

The handicaps for tonight’s games are: Wetheral +3 v Courtfield; West End +13 v Brampton; Stanwix +12 v Dalston; Holme Head +15 v Subscription.

Tomorrow’s handicaps are Courtfield v Dalston +1; Holme Head +17 v Brampton; Wetheral v Stanwix +6; West End v Subscription +1.

Cumbria Ladies have made a very good start to the season, winning both opening matches easily.

In the Northern Trophy, Cumbria met Northumberland at Courtfield and scored a facile victory taking all 11 points. Sandra Parker won 31-11, Kath Baxter 32-11, Elsie Bell 28-10, Noreen Fleet 26-11, Jeanette Bell 20-15 and Nicola Bowe 18-15.

In the Stella Logan game, at Pelton Fell against Durham, Pauline Yates won 26-18, Jenny Walker 18-12, Joyce Hodgson 21-17, Sylvia Jefferies 17-14, while Christine Southward drew her game 17-17. Incidentally I have not missed a result - the Stella Logan is now just five fours.

There have been several games completed in the national club events.

In the two fours, Aspatria defeated Wigton Park 49-35, Silloth beat Subscription 44-42 and Workington overwhelmed Courtfield 34-15.

In the Top Club, Whitehaven won all five disciplines against Dalston.

Warwickshire County Bowls Association visited Fitz Park in Keswick on the final day of their Cumbrian tour.

The team had beaten Whitehaven Bowls Club, Wigton BC and Carlisle Subscription before losing out to Workington.

Visits to Courtfield, Carlisle, and Fitz Park Bowling Club in Keswick both resulted in victories for the home sides.
