Cumbria's Premier hammer thrower Nick Miller won silver at the inaugural Athletics World Cup as Great Britain finished third.

Competing at the London Stadium over the weekend, the United States came top of the overall standings with 219 points, with 57 points more than second-placed Poland and 64 more than the Brits.

Miller, 25, played his part for the British side with his third-round throw of 76.14m enough for second spot in the hammer event, with only world-leading Polish thrower Wojciech Nowicki (77.94m) finishing ahead of the Scotby lad.

He said: "I am very happy with the result, second place and seven team points.

"I am getting back into shape and looking forward to the European Championships [to be held in Berlin in August]."

Winning the silver medal saw Miller continue his successful year on the field, having won Commonwealth gold with a Games record on the Gold Coast, Australia, in April with a throw of 80.26m.

But Miller has been struggling with illness since claiming gold Down Under - and says he has had "a year of highs and lows".

"It [the year] started great with big throws and then, of course, a massive throw at the Commonwealth Games," the Border Harrier admitted.

"Things after this were not so great because I got a virus and I have been working hard to get my fitness and strength back.

"I wanted to do well here to give me confidence leading into the Europeans, so this has been a great result for me."

Great Britain's women's 4x100m relay team also impressed as they claimed a surprise victory.
